About
In 2012, Jaime Alvarez, a Director of Finance & Operations in the non-profit sector, was in need of an accounting assistant. By chance, he met Lorena Varela, a cashier with an accounting degree from Guadalajara, Mexico, at a local restaurant whom he ended up hiring for the position.
After a few years of working together, Lorena mentioned her desire to open up a restaurant of her own. Not long after, the future partners decided to take the plunge. They came across a potential business location in the city of Downey, CA, but after initial negotiations fell through, they turned their attention to a rundown donut shop in Alhambra. The second deal went much smoother and soon after they were awarded the lease and immediately began transforming the space into their vision.
In March of 2017, Baja Cali’s flagship location was open for business. In just two years, the organization expanded from just six employees to more than seventy staff members across seven locations that year.
Since then, Baja Cali Fish & Tacos has gained a reputation for serving authentic, Ensenada-style fish tacos. They have established themselves as a reputable brand with a “cult-like” following. The restaurant proudly uses the freshest ingredients as their core team makes all the sauces, marinades, and preps all food to serve consistently delicious food daily. Rafa, the establishment’s head chef, and Lorena, their CFO are constantly working on new recipes to keep the community excited (and that means lots of yummy food tastings for their kitchen and office staff!). In addition to authentic serving authentic plates, they are also known for their friendly staff and casual, relaxed atmosphere, making it a popular spot for families and groups of friends.
